Enable Archival Storage
Archival Storage stores cold data on Simple Object Storage at a reduced rate, on the buckets you already run. It is meant for data you keep and rarely read back: cold archives, long-term backups, and retention data.
Nothing changes technically. Enrolled buckets keep the same names, the same S3 endpoints, the same credentials, and the same zone. Only the rate applied to stored bytes changes, through a monthly discount on the invoice.

Check whether it pays off for your bucket
Every bucket enrolled in Archival Storage is billed for at least 10 TB of storage per month, metered as 9,313 GiB since Object Storage bills in GiB, even if it holds less. That floor is €42 per month. Below roughly 2.3 TB in a bucket, the floor costs more than paying the Standard rate on the real volume.

The floor applies per bucket, not per organization. Consolidating several small archives into one bucket is usually cheaper than enrolling each of them separately.
Requirements
- Archival workloads. Hot, frequently accessed data stays on the Standard Class. Each request is reviewed against the actual access pattern of the bucket.
- 10 TB billed per bucket, metered as 9,313 GiB. Whatever the bucket holds.
- No object lock or retention. These features are not available on enrolled buckets. They arrive with the Cold Storage Class. If a workload needs immutability today, keep it on the Standard Class.
Request activation
- Open the activation request form.
- Submit your organization ID and the name of the bucket to enroll. One request per bucket.
- The request is checked against the requirements above. If the bucket qualifies, the Archival rate is granted.
There is no separate confirmation step: you see the rate applied as a discount on your next invoice. No action is required on the bucket itself either, no API call, no flag to set, and no data to move.
How the discount is billed
Usage on an enrolled bucket is metered and invoiced at the Standard rate, and the difference down to the Archival rate comes back as a discount line on the invoice.
Billing accrues at the end of each month, and the discount starts with the next full billing period. A request approved on 20 June therefore covers July usage, and the discount appears on the July invoice issued at the end of that month.
Once approved, nothing else is required.
When the Warm and Cold Storage Classes launch
The Warm and Cold Storage Classes are planned for early 2027. A 30-day window opens at launch, during which each enrolled bucket is moved to the Storage Class you want it on.
Moving a bucket to Cold Storage keeps the same storage price of €0.0042 per GB/month, with the same data, the same buckets, the same S3 API, and the same zone. Two things change in your favour: the 10 TB minimum no longer applies, and object lock and retention become available. One thing is added: Cold Storage charges €0.027 per GiB retrieved and applies a 90-day minimum storage duration, where Archival Storage has neither today.
Warm Storage and the Standard Class stay available if either fits the workload better.
